On to Nebraska

Image
We got up and headed out today with the goal of getting to Scottsbluff, Nebraska. We have friends who live there, and they’re hosting us for the night.  Luckily it’s only about four hours from Colorado Springs, not a bad drive.  We like to find silly things to see along the way. Our first stop was to see two oddities in Fort Collins. On the campus of the University of Colorado, Fort Collins exists a giant Campbell’s Soup can. That was fun, but adjacent was the university’s experimental flower garden … a cool stop.  Just on the other side of town was the largest ice cream churn, it’s actually an ice cream shop … yes, we had ice cream.  After ice cream we stopped in Cheyenne, Wyoming. It was just an hour away. It was pretty quiet and a nice town. We did take a picture of the now decommissioned Peace Keeper missals on the edge of town.  Wyoming State Capital Building After just another 90 minutes we arrived in Scottsbluff to spend the night with Kathy and Jeff. Aspen and Pikes Peak

Image
Today we drove to and through Aspen. Lucky for us it’s street market day; we picked up some great lunch items. We have never, ever seen a higher concentration of posh people (NO exaggeration), well-groomed dogs, high-end shops, and private jets (literally, the airport was a Learjet parking lot)! Fun stop!  Gorgeous location! From Aspen we headed east, which was a beautiful drive. We crossed the continental divide at Independence Pass.  We went on to Colorado Springs and rode the Manitou and Pikes Peak Railway to the top of Pikes Peak — 14,  115 feet. This is the highest we ever been terrestrially. We really felt the altitude.  It was cloudy at the top.

Let’s Go!

We decided to drive across the US … Let’s go! To start off, Kristi had appointments two days in a row at Stanford, so we spent Wednesday night in the Bay Area. We had a great dinner at Doppio Zero.  After Kristi was done with her scans at about 12:30 PM on Thursday we set off. Traffic and road construction was as crazy all the way to Reno.  We made it to Elko, NV for the night.  The next day we set off and arrived in Glenwood Springs, CO and we camped for the night. We did stop  in the Salt Lake City Area to see the worlds largest blender. 😂
